What happens to dormant websites that still represent a brand?

In brief

An unattended site can continue to represent the business long after its original purpose ends. Its current visibility, remaining users, factual accuracy, and ownership determine whether to update, archive, consolidate, or retire it.

A former campaign can still look like an available offer. A forgotten domain can retain obsolete leadership and contact details. The review checks what a new visitor would reasonably infer, rather than assuming the site’s age is obvious.

Retirement also involves the domain and account, not just the pages. Letting a domain lapse can remove a useful redirect and allow another party to register the address. Keeping ownership without maintaining the site can leave a different set of misleading references.

Keep useful historical material accessible with a clear status and links to current information. When pages move, map destinations and apply relevant redirects for existing visitors. Check that each redirect takes readers to information matching the original page's purpose.
