Is AI visibility share the same as market share?
In brief
No. AI visibility share describes observed appearances within a defined question set and competitor set. Market share measures economic activity in a defined market. A brand can be frequently named in sampled answers without leading in sales, and a market leader can be poorly represented in those same answers.
The visibility denominator determines what the figure means. Counting every mention, only suitable recommendations, answers containing the brand, or all named-provider appearances produces different measures. A share can rise because competitors appear less often even when the brand's own count is unchanged. A report should retain the raw counts and counting rules.
The diagnostic value lies in locating specific discovery or representation gaps. A low figure on relevant buyer questions can identify missing evidence or a recurring false exclusion, but it is not a revenue estimate. Commercial research is needed to assess actual customer choices. A useful trend preserves consistent conditions and separates presence from accuracy and suitability. Calling the measure market share can turn a bounded monitoring sample into a much broader claim that the data does not support.
