How should AI share of visibility be calculated?

In brief

Define share of visibility with a counting rule and denominator. Specify whether it measures answers containing a brand, suitable recommendations, or the brand's share of all named-provider mentions. Label each measure clearly so readers can compare like with like.

A useful report shows the raw numerator, denominator, question set, platforms, period, and peer list. It should specify treatment of duplicate names, subsidiaries, negative references, and mistaken identity. Share can increase when competitors appear less often even if the brand's own count does not change. A new sample mix can also move the ratio without a change in any comparable question.

The figure is most useful for locating a diagnostic gap, then opening the underlying answers. A recommendation for the wrong capability is different from a justified inclusion, and neither establishes economic market share. Consistent definitions allow changes to be interpreted over time. The practical improvement is better representation in relevant situations, with accurate reasons and evidence, rather than a larger percentage produced by changing the comparison set or counting incidental mentions.
