How should honorary titles and recognitions appear in an executive’s record?

In brief

Honorary and professional titles should use the issuing body's terminology and make their nature clear. An honorary degree, earned qualification, advisory affiliation, award, and operating position establish different facts.

Verify the distinction through the issuer's public record or other authoritative confirmation and the relevant dates. Retain honorary designations, term limits and the scope of advisory roles. Correct an inaccurate claim that flatters the executive using the same factual standard.

The remedy is usually a precise description across current-facing biographies and frequently copied profile text. Historical sources can retain the terminology used at the time if their context is clear. The goal is not to diminish an achievement, but to prevent ambiguous wording from becoming a false credential or an unsupported claim of current responsibility.
