How is a search and AI competitor benchmark constructed?

In brief

A reputation benchmark compares how a brand and relevant peers appear for equivalent stakeholder questions. It should expose differences in accuracy, suitability, narrative, and supporting evidence. A league table built only from mentions can conceal serious misrepresentation or reward irrelevant appearances.

Choose peers through the audience decision being assessed. Explain the comparison set, distinguishing product alternatives, regional specialists and corporate competitors named by leadership. Apply comparable questions, collection conditions and classification rules. Repeat observations to assess whether differences persist across responses.

Results should remain inspectable at question and theme level. A brand can lead on one capability while being omitted from another it actually supplies. Share of visibility can summarize the selected landscape, but the raw denominator and counting rules need to remain visible. The finding is evidence about observed representation, not an independent assessment of product superiority or commercial share. A useful benchmark explains which gaps can be addressed through better evidence and which reflect a real difference in what the businesses offer.
