How is a factual error in a credible source corrected?

In brief

A factual error in an authoritative source should be corrected with precise evidence, not dismissed because the publisher is generally credible or challenged merely because the wording is unfavorable. The request needs to identify the statement, explain the discrepancy, and provide the closest reliable original reference.

Match the evidence to the error: a current appointment record for leadership, an original filing for an entity or date, and the complete statement for a distorted quotation. Distinguish a factual error in the original article from a later development that calls for an update. Make the corresponding request to the publisher.

Map influential copies and summaries carrying the same claim. After a source correction, inspect search previews, republished versions and AI answers separately. Use the relevant refresh process for outdated search presentation where the source has changed. Record outreach, revised source text and subsequent research encounters as distinct stages of the work.
