How do you track branded search movement without losing comparability?

In brief

Keep a stable panel of queries and search conditions, and store each observation as a dated result-page record. Record the exact query, market, language, device, result type, URL, title, snippet and capture status. Track new issues in an additional panel rather than silently replacing the original sample.

Use stable identities for both pages and story families so redirects, parameter changes and syndicated copies do not create false gains or losses. Preserve organic position separately from news, images, sitelinks, ads and generated answers. A result can move lower while a damaging preview becomes more prominent in another feature.

Compare matched observations first, then calculate summary measures with stated denominators. Search Console describes owned-property impressions, clicks and average position; it does not provide a complete external-result inventory. Combine it with preserved observations while keeping their scopes clear. Annotate migrations, major news and collection changes. The resulting time series should show which encounter changed and why it matters, rather than turning a shifting set of queries into an apparent reputation trend.
