What happens when a brand is placed in the wrong category?
In brief
A wrong category can make a business appear unsuitable for a relevant need or create expectations it cannot meet. The correction needs to establish what the business actually does, not merely repeat its preferred label.
The assessment identifies where the category appears and what evidence supports it. An old product, a namesake, a vague company description, or a third-party classification can sustain the label. A broad but accurate category is different from a false classification.
Current pages should connect the company’s name with its actual offer, customers, scope, and relevant examples. Identity information can also help distinguish the legal entity and associated profiles. Structured data describes supported facts; it does not force a search engine to accept a chosen category.
External profiles follow their own criteria and update processes. Show the specific mismatch and verifiable current information in a factual request. Inspect the surrounding evidence as well as the wording to address the source of the misunderstanding.
