Should a brand pursue AI visibility for category discovery or brand-specific searches?

In brief

Category discovery and brand-specific research serve different stages of a decision. Discovery questions identify possible providers or approaches. Named-brand questions help people evaluate an option they already know. A company can perform well in one stage while being absent or misrepresented in the other.

Build separate question sets for discovery and brand-specific evaluation. Test how broad problem searches present specialist providers, educational sources, and alternative methods. Test named-company questions for reliability, capability, ownership, and fit. Assess how each source serves those tasks, and report discovery results separately from the accuracy of company summaries.

Set priorities around the business situation: establish category associations for a new entrant and address serious evaluation errors for an established provider. Assess the recommendation against actual buyer requirements and the correct product. Keep discovery inclusion and known-brand accuracy distinct in reporting, while examining how search and AI encounters connect across the research journey.
