How can a brand respond to a competitor’s unsupported superiority claims?

In brief

A response to a competitor’s superiority claim should establish the comparison being made and the evidence that supports it. A stronger factual account is usually more useful than a competing unsupported superlative.

The assessment identifies the exact statement, its audience, and its basis: performance, market size, customer experience, or a narrower product characteristic. A broad “best” claim can be opinion, while a specific measurable comparison requires evidence appropriate to that claim.

Public content can explain the criteria relevant to a buyer and show the brand’s actual performance against them. Comparisons should use equivalent products, conditions, and dates. Selecting an outdated or unrepresentative version of the rival’s offer can make an otherwise useful comparison misleading.

Use a formal challenge for a consequential false claim, with relevant specialist input. Assess the statement's significance before responding, and keep any accusation tied to the evidence.
